Each month we will feature one of the many helpful articles included in a subscription to My Life in the Arts. This month get some advice on how to choose which of the 1,500 schools listed in our site is right for you!

This article is not going to try and convince you to go to college but will give you some things to think about whatever you decide to do.
 
The most common reasons young people do not want to go to college:
  • “School is too expensive and I can’t afford it.”
  • “I didn’t get into the school of my choice so I’d rather not go at all.”
  • “I have trouble with academics and I am fearful of not being able to keep up with the academic classes or not getting to college at all.”
  • “I want to work in theatre as a professional so taking science classes seems like a huge waste of my time and money.”
  • “I want to work in theatre as a professional actor and you don’t need a degree to do that.”
  • “Everyone says I’m really talented and I always get jobs now so why should I go to college.”
First things first, whether you decide to go to college or not- the bottom line is you need training and your training will or should never stop. Professional dancers have to take class every day to keep their bodies in shape and to keep forming their bodies as their bodies are always changing. Professional singers continue to take lessons even in their prime for the same reason as dancers- as they get older they need to learn how to adapt their instrument.
