Christy Whitney, RN, MSN
Christy graduated from Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois with degrees in Psychology and Nursing. She received a Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Colorado. She completed an internship in the Congressional Office of Congressman Willis Gradison from Ohio.
Christy practiced as a clinical nurse in a variety of settings prior to a career that included hospice care and health care administration.
She served as the founding Director of Hospice of Mercy in Durango, served as Vice President of Patient Services at Mercy Medical Center, CEO of Hospice Northern Virginia in Arlington, Virginia and presently serves as the founding CEO and President of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado. She serves as a consultant in the areas of leadership, organizational development and compliance.
Under her leadership Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado has grown from a handful of patients to caring for an average daily census of over 350 patients each day through 4 offices. The organization has 220 employees and over 450 volunteers, and an annual budget of $18 million. They are currently developing a Hospice Campus in Grand Junction that includes a renovated historic home that houses their Child/Teen Grief Center and will open a 13 bed inpatient facility in spring 2008. The program has been recognized by the American Hospital Association and the El Pomar Foundation for excellence.
She currently serves as a board member of the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization, she serves as Vice Chair of The National Hospice Work Group, a national “think tank” of hospice executives from across the country. She is Chair of the Hospice Alliance of Colorado.
She co-authored the American Nurses' Association Standards of Hospice Nursing, and wrote chapters for the American Hospital Association publication: "Hospital Hospice Management Models" and the Veterans Administration Hospice Manual. She was the principle author of the National Hospice Organization's first edition of Service Guidelines for Hospice Care published in 1996 and helped develop the Standards of Hospice Care for the National Hospice Organization.
Christy has been recognized by the Veteran’s Administration, The Girl Scouts of America, and The Colorado Nurses Association. She is a recipient of the Colorado Nurses Foundation Nightingale Award.
