Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost News

The City of Mill Valley (along many other Cities) has recently enacted curbside compost legislation.

As a result, the weekly curbside collection services that Mill Valley Refuse now provides are Refuse, Recycle, and Compost/yardgrass
service; along with bi-weekly yard-only waste - when no food scraps are present.

Notice that your designated/regular pick-up day and pick-up time remain the same for all services.

Required Containers:

  • Refuse: Residential customers must purchase their own 20, 32 or 45 gallon can for refuse (landfill) waste. Each size has its own separate rate.

  • Recycle: Customers may also use the "single stream" recycling blue/brown cart provided by Mill Valley Refuse, or purchase their own (smaller) recycle bins or buckets.  The collectors will return any of these to the curb (or other areas designated for pickup).

  • Compost:  For food scraps and/or yard waste, customers must use the green cart or can provided by Mill Valley Refuse - various sizes are available.  Customers may place a medium compost bucket into their green can at the curb. The collectors will separately lift the smaller bucket out, dump it and return to the curb (or other areas designated for pickup).

If pests become a problem with any of these containers, Mill Valley Refuse suggests you may use a bungee cord to hold the can’s or cart’s lid down.

Just a friendly reminder:

As per the SRHOA CC&Rs, trash, recycle, compost or similar containers should be put out for collection no sooner than the night before scheduled pick-up.

After pick-up, they are to be removed from public view as soon as possible.
