E.E. "Butch" Cummings has announced his candidacy for re-election to the office of Justice of the Peace, Pct. 5, Hardin County.
Cummings was raised in Saratoga and has lived in the Lumberton area for the past 42 years. He and his wife, Barbara have two children and five grandchildren. He raised his children in Lumberton, sent them to school there and both of them graduated from Lamar University.
"I like this job. Before I did this I worked for the city for a few years as assistant judge, so I've had 20 years or so experience. You have to know how to treat people. My motto has always been to treat people how I want to be treated. It's worked out real good for me.
"I'm not going to change. Even though I switched parties from Democrat to Republican, I am still Butch. I am still going to do my job like I am supposed to. When people come into my court I don't ask them if they are democrat or republican. I don't tell them that democrats have to sit here and republicans have to sit there. We have to work with everybody and we do.
"I've been in office going on my sixteenth year. I have never had a democrat party person come by my office and ask how things are going or what they could do to better the party or what they could tell the people up in Washington or Austin. I have had, for the last ten or twelve years, several different republicans come by that are concerned.
"I felt like this is something that i needed to do. Our community is more independent and republican oriented than they are democrat. I think my faith is more in line with the republican party. I think the government is over spending. They keep taxing us more and more. They are trying to take our freedoms away from us and I don't like that.
"I like people being able to make their own decisions and I feel like that is what they are trying to do. I'm not ashamed that I turned to the republican party. I have a lot of democrat friends and we pick about it now. Whatever we do, we are going to do our best. I just believe more in the republican stance.
"Being Justice of the Peace you have a lot of things that you have to do. You handle civil suits up to $10,000; you get DPS tickets and some of the Hardin county tickets for people who are speeding or disorderly conduct or things like that. We do a few weddings. We also do inquests. In the middle of the night if somebody dies in a car accident we have to get up out of bed and go.
"What I try to do is if people are in a bind, especially nowadays, we try to work with them if they don't have the money to pay a fine right then we will try to set it up where they can pay it a little later. If they just don't have it we have them do community service work. Sometimes they work for the city patching roads or things like that. With some of the kids you put mama and daddy in a bind trying to pay these fines, so I let them do community service.
"I try to handle my cases fairly. Even though I know a lot of people, when it comes to court fair is fair. I don't dodge my obligation because I know somebody. I've had to rule against some of my friends, but I felt like that was the thing that I had to do. They were a little hurt at that time, but there's not much I can do but to treat everybody like they ought to be treated.
"I have a good staff here. Holly was a retiree from DPS and Missy worked for the Sheriff's department until I stole her from there. They do a good job. They treat people good; they treat them right. They have some leeway to do some things. As long as you have somebody who can talk to people and treat them right you can do that. I have those kind of people.
"My family has been around this area for a long time and enjoyed it. I don't think we could move to a better place than we have right here. Our city is doing a super job. Everybody gets along; we all help each other. It's just a great place to live. I am proud that I raised my kids here and that they have gotten a good education. We have a lot of love in our family. That's better than money."I would appreciate your vote to re-elect me as your Justice of the Peace, precinct 5 of Hardin county in the upcoming election."
